Your team

You will be part of the Bank Lending Conditions Section of the Monetary Analysis Division in the Directorate General Monetary Policy. Our Directorate General monitors and analyses the monetary policy strategy and monetary policy stance of the ECB’s Governing Council, as well as monetary and financial developments. It also analyses strategic aspects of monetary policy, such as the transmission of monetary policy impulses, the term structure and links with financial stability. We are currently working on the monetary policy response to inflation developments and its transmission to the broader economy.
In your role as Research Analyst, you will be part of a team of around 20 members of staff responsible for analysing the transmission of monetary policy via banks and assessing bank liquidity and funding conditions across the euro area. We monitor the evolution of bank lending conditions, applying state-of-the-art empirical methods to granular data from credit registers, firms’ balance sheets and information provided by banks, including the ECB’s bank lending survey, for which we are responsible. We also assess the implications of banks’ regulatory and supervisory frameworks for the monetary policy transmission mechanism and the wider economy. You will work closely with colleagues and managers from across the Division and the Directorate General, as well as stakeholders in other business areas.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Research Analyst you will:
  • contribute to preparing monetary policy, in particular by building and handling the Section’s databases and dashboards, organising data and managing information;
  • summarise and visualise data (including microdata) using the most up-to-date data science methods;
  • compile and analyse data for briefings, regular reports, ECB publications and analytical/research projects in areas of interest for the Division;
  • support the development and enhancement of analytical tools for monitoring, analysing and interpreting bank lending conditions;
  • contribute to notes, briefings, memos, regular reports and analytical/research projects by preparing charts and tables and providing insights on the underlying data;
  • contribute to the overall coordination of trainees and of the Division’s various data centre work streams.
We are seeking candidates for this role who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidate in their future development of the required knowledge, skills or competencies.
The position offers you excellent opportunities to contribute to the preparation of monetary policy in the euro area and to foster the adoption of the latest analytical tools and best practices for data analysis at the ECB. In doing so, you will work with and be supported by a highly motivated and skilled team using state-of-the-art empirical methods and unique data sources. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in economics, finance or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of one year’s practical experience (e.g. gained through traineeships) in the field of data analysis and/or data management;
  • practical experience gained in a central bank or a comparable international institution;
  • programming skills and experience using statistical software such as Python, Stata or R;
  • sound knowledge of data management techniques;
  • experience in handling and analysing large datasets, particularly relating to banking or finance;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
  • a master’s degree in economics, finance or another relevant field.
You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.
You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
